A Taste of Vengeance A November Tale A novel
Paul Franklin, writing as P.E.Franklin, draws upon nearly three decades of experience with London’s Metropolitan Police in his debut novel to create a gritty psychological thriller. He explores love, grief and retribution against a background of terrorist intrigue and police investigations which are going nowhere.
The story is set where he used to live, around Stratford, Wanstead Flats and Leytonstone. The novel follows Chris Atkins, a former British soldier who has exchanged foreign conflicts for a quieter life as a delivery driver for a supermarket chain. An unthinkable act destroys the life he shares with his wife Janet. Chris is pulled into a life threatening pursuit in search of answers where conventional justice and personal vengeance inevitably collide.
As Chris navigates stalled police investigations, hidden motives and escalating danger, the narrative gradually moves beyond the boundaries of the traditional crime thriller. His search becomes entwined with spiritual and supernatural forces. The author uses this unexpected dimension to explore his own ideas surrounding life and death while maintaining a foundation informed by real experiences, locations and situations he personally encountered during his career.
That career included postings to Plaistow, Bethnal Green and Diplomatic Protection in Central London. This last brought him into contact with counter terrorism operations, the army, royalty protection and central government departments including Downing Street. His final posting and promotion to Inspector brought him back to his east London roots at Ilford. He was thus provided a wide range of professional experiences from which to draw. Rather than recount these directly, he chose fiction as the vehicle for incorporating elements of what he had witnessed while allowing imagination to reshape them into a suspenseful and compelling narrative.
This combination along with real east London locations gives A Taste of Vengeance a November Tale its distinctive identity. Readers are invited to suspend their disbelief as recognisable elements of policing and east London life interact with spiritual forces, questions surrounding death and a protagonist consumed by loss, bring the novel to a dramatic conclusion. Underlying all is a cautionary message regarding the juxtaposition of retribution and justice. This story deserves to be translated effectively to the screen.
The author now lives in British Columbia, Canada, with his family. He has started work on a sequel.
